Offer of $20,000/year for five years with four years of summer support (~$3,000) and health insurance, first and final years fully-funded and the others aided by teaching writing seminars (on medieval topics).

This is not a bad deal.

A future colleague?
I stumbled across your LJ and just wanted to post because I've also just been accepted to the medieval studies programme at Cornell! I applied to all medieval studies programmes actually (I'm doing medieval Latin/Old English/palaeography). The department and curriculum seem pretty great, don't they? And the funding package is quite generous (ND's offer was $16K per year, though, granted, their package was 3 years of fellowship and 2 years of teaching).

Are you planning to visit? I'm still waiting on some other schools as well, but yes, having an acceptance from Cornell definitely does have the effect of saving you from utter insanity! Anyway, just wanted to say 'hello'. Good luck with your other applications!

Re: A future colleague?
Hello! I've added you as a friend, and I see that you're in Cam right now (which apparently I'm supposed to call the "Other Place"). Are you an undergraduate at the moment or working on a MPhil/Masters?

I'm super-excited about Cornell, and although I am also waiting on a couple other programs, I'll be completely satisfied going there even if I don't get in anywhere else. Anyway, keep in touch... maybe I'll see you in the fall!

Hi there,
Thanks for friending me! Oh yes, we're mortal enemies, presumably. I'm doing an MPhil in historical linguistics (medieval Latin and Old English)... I see you're doing English from 650-1550 - cool! And I also just saw that you have another acceptance, from UMich - congratulations!! Anywho, keep in touch, and hope the offers continue to roll in. :o)
