A Crazy 24 hours

Today I had dinner and was about to leave for choir when my mom IMed me.

"UPenn just called; they are emailing you."

And so I went to choir all a-twitter with the thought that I might get to study with David Wallace next year, which is tantamount to touching God in medieval-english-professor form.

So, I got back from choir and checked my gmail; I saw one in which the first line ran "Congratulations on your acceptance..." and so I clicked on it and started reading and was very very very confused.

It was an email from UCLA.

The email from UPenn arrived about half an hour later, after I'd skyped a professor at Penn, returning her call.

Long story short, I got accepted to two schools today... and suddenly life is just that much more confusing. A good sort of confusing, though.

i can't imagine ANY school turning you down. i mean, seriously. pfft.

Well, there were plenty who did last year, and, honestly, with ~3% acceptance rates for most of the schools I was accepted to, a little bit of luck really is necessary.

No, I think it's a mistake, since you assured me you would be rejected everywhere. All of these calls and e-mails are highly improbable, coinciding mistakes. Don't worry, in a few days you'll receive fill-in-the-blank type rejection letters printed on post-it notes covered in coffee stains.

Oh, I DO hope I get a madlibs rejection from SOMEWHERE!

preferably stained in blood, for dramatic effect, as though a dwarf with a bad sense of humor had been tragically attacked and murdered in pursuit of my eventual downfall.

then again, I suppose it would be silly of me to expect that much effort from any school, eh?

sheesh, i just looked at the UCLA website for the first time. that place is HUGE! i counted twelve distinct biology related departments. TWELVE. Including separate nerobiology and neuroscience programs. How different can those two things be?!?

But it does kind of make me drool. ^^

The entire UC-system is huge... and, considering the weather patterns out in CA, i wouldn't be surprised if you ended up there. :)

i dunno...i just looked at Cornell's programs and just about had (what i am now going to term) a sci-gasm. they have a neurobiology and behavior dept that emphasizes the relationship between behaviors and their physiological basis, which is pretty much what i want to get into (along with their ecology and evolution, of course). i could even get extra funding for doing research in that bent. @_@

(i have to use the cat licking its chops userpic for these kinds of comments. it fits perfectly.)

I think you'll keep being astounded by some of these programs' interesting nooks and crannies, and the amazing work some profs have done. Really, it is an overwhelming but wonderful time, researching this stuff...

aHA! I have found your grad school lj. Hearty congratulations!! I'm glad your scholastic efforts are being recognized for their great worth. God's blessing with your decision- I'll be visiting you, wherever you are. :-)

good! but, more to the point... are you going to visit me where I am now!??!?!?!?

miss ya! and say hi to ben for me (PS... there is a boy in one of my choirs who looks and talks a little bit like Ben. i will try to surreptitiously take a picture/video of him and let you see for yourself. I think it's uncanny... but I don't know Ben like you do).

Indeed, due to the renewed trend toward shaggy longer hair for guys, I have seen many Ben look-alikes. One night I went to a party and there was a guy there with the same shirt and hairstyle as Ben. Freaky.

I would like very very VERY much to visit, but it all depends on my summer job situation, which is pending at the moment. I might be able to squeeze in a visit after the last day of school for 5-7 days- that would be around April 26-27 to May 1-2. What does your school schedule look like then?

That is in the beginning of my final(trinity) term here, but we don't have classes in trinity. Are there going to be any of the BestOf coming at some point? I'm sort of in the dark about any plans that were being made, and I assumed the trip was a no-go... but do you know anything?

They sent out an email a while back, but I haven't heard anything. You might want to contact Karen, the Trip Planner Extraordinaire.
